Hormonal Headaches

Headaches seem to be part and parcel of our lives. While many of the headaches affect all of us, hormonal headaches affect only women. This is because the headache is related to the female sexual hormones and the reproductive cycle of a woman. Luckily this headache only makes its appearance only during the menstrual cycle.

The level of estrogen in the body fluctuates during the menstrual cycle. It is this fluctuating that causes hormonal headaches. Some changes that can precipitate the hormonal headache are menarche, premenstrual syndrome, pregnancy, and menopause. During these times the intensity and the frequency of hormonal headaches varies.

The symptoms of hormonal headaches appear to be similar to that of migraine headaches. You will feel a throbbing pain in one side of the head, there will be nausea, vomiting, light sensitivity and aggravation caused by loud noises.

Many women will get hormonal headaches in conjunction with premenstrual syndrome. Generally the conditions that sets off both the headaches and the premenstrual syndrome occur at least 11 days before the menstrual period cycle. During this time in addition to the premenstrual syndrome symptoms women will also be subject to the symptoms of hormonal headaches.

The premenstrual syndrome symptoms include an acne outbreak, anxiety, emotional sensitivity, constipation, food cravings, fatigue, impaired concentration, hormonal headaches, increased appetite, lowered sexual drive and joint pain. Some women may experience severe premenstrual syndrome. At this point the hormonal headaches and others symptoms can become debilitating.

There are times when you might confuse a menstrual migraine as being a hormonal headache. The difference between the two is that a menstrual migraine occurs during the period phase. The hormonal headache occurs prior to the period. It usually surfaces alongside that of premenstrual syndrome.

Many women use oral contraceptives to prevent getting pregnant. There is a correlation between the use of contraceptives and hormonal headaches occurring. As these tablets cause a change in the estrogen levels there is a strong possibility that the tablets could be one reason why women get hormonal headaches.

To prevent hormonal headaches from occurring taking medication before the headache strikes can reduce your chances of getting hormonal headaches. When you know that you will get hormonal headaches in conjunction with your premenstrual cycle and menstruation you can use triptans a few days in advance. Aspirin, acetaminophen, and ibuprofen can decrease the frequency of your getting hormonal headaches.

As hormonal headaches are a type of headache that only women are subject to understanding your menstrual cycle can help you find ways of adjusting to this period while your medication begins to take effect.

Headache Types

There are a number of commonly known headache types. These include migraine headaches, tension headaches, chronic daily headaches, cluster headaches, ice pick headaches and sinister headaches.

A migraine headache is a severe headache. This headache has been found to have a profound impact on the daily lives of the sufferers. The pain can be a pulsating sensation or sometimes a throbbing head pain. This throbbing pain can be moderate to severe. The symptoms of migraine headaches include nausea, extreme sensitivity to light and sound. With migraine headache types there is an early warning sensation called an aura.

This aura can be vision changes, you may see bright flashes, zigzags and sometimes you may even lose part of your vision. You may even experience numbness or tingling in your arms. These warning symptoms will fade a few days before the migraine attacks begin. A migraine headache can last for about 3 days without any medication before it subsides.

Tension headache types cause a dull and constant pain around the forehead region, the sides or back of the head. Some people liken a tension headache to a tight band around the head. This is considered to be one of the most common types of headache. In a tension headache you will not find symptoms like light sensitivity, nausea or even vomiting.

Tension headaches can occur as episodic or chronic. Generally most sufferers of tension headache types experience chronic headaches most of the time. It is estimated that about 40% of people suffer from tension headaches. Chronic daily headaches are yet another of the headache types.

Most of the time chronic daily headaches are tension headaches or headaches that are caused by too much pain medication. In this headache type the pain is a constant, dull pain. There is also a feeling or tightness like a rubber band around the head. A chronic daily headache can be diagnosed by its length of time. That is the pain must last for 15 continuous days per month during a 3 month time period.

Another of the headache types is that of Cluster headaches. This is a rare but very painful type of headache. The name of the headache occurs from the fact that the headache pain happens in clusters. Frequent periods of Cluster headaches may last weeks or months. This time period is followed by long periods headache-free time.

Cluster headaches are found on one side of the head. Usually the sharp, penetrating pain begins behind an eye. Cluster headache types cause red, teary eyes, a stuffy nose. Sometimes symptoms like nausea and sensitivity to light may occur.

These are just a few of the many headaches that can be experienced. The pain from the headache types can be mild or they can be excruciating in their severity. To find relief from these headache types you can talk with your doctor about treatment or you can buy some over the counter headache pain medication.

There are a number of different treatments for headaches. These treatments are geared for the pain of each type of headache. As the severity of some of these headaches can be excruciating like that of a cluster headache treatment must be considered as being suitable for the individual in question and their specific form of headache.

Cluster headache pain is known to start in the region of an eye or the temples. The pain can last for about 15 minutes to 3 hours. The pain is felt as being sharp and piercing in addition to being severe in nature. Generally the cluster headache can occur in groups or cluster formations. The symptoms of cluster headaches can be identified as drooping eyelids, red, watery eyes and nasal congestion occurring on the affected face side.

To prevent the recurring form of cluster headache treatment must be composed of induction, maintenance and symptomatic treatments. Of these treatments induction and maintenance have been developed towards preventing the onset of cluster headaches. Symptomatic treatments on the other hand are meant to stop or shorten the time of the headache attack.

Induction cluster headache treatment uses drugs like prednisone to break the cluster headache cycle. Induction drugs are meant only as a jumping off point for the next stage of treatment. With maintenance drugs like verapamil, ergotamine, methysergide and others the reduction of the cluster headache symptoms can be seen. For the actual response to be noted a week’s duration of use must be taken.

Both the induction and maintenance drugs are not to be used in the long term therapy. They are only short term medications for cluster headache treatment. Mthysergide can be used as a long term medication but it needs to be stopped once a month every year in order to prevent dangerous side effects.

The symptomatic cluster headache treatment can include oxygen inhalation, Sumatriptan injections, and local anesthetics being applied inside of  the nose. Surgery is used only as a last resort. This form of cluster headache treatment comes into effect only if the individual fails to respond to other forms of therapy.

Unlike many other types of headaches cluster headaches do not respond to the over the counter medications that are available therefore you should use preventative medication like muscle relaxants, calcium channel blockers like Verapimil, ergot compounds, anti-seizure medicines, and atypical anti-psychotics.

These are just a few of the cluster headache treatment medications and therapies that you can try. One of the best forms of cluster headache treatment could be understanding the various types of triggers and avoiding exposure to these. By practicing a suitable cluster headache treatment you have the means of stopping more of these debilitating headache attacks at your disposal.

Cluster Headaches

There are many people in the world who suffer from various types of headaches. Usually these headaches can be treated with over the counter pain medications. There are times when the headache pain that is experienced is very severe. One such headache that can cause severe pain is called Cluster headaches.

This form of headaches is considered as being very rare. Where other headaches appear to occur as a band around the forehead region Cluster Headaches occur in groups or clusters. The pain from a Cluster Headache can last between 15 minutes up to 3 hours. They are of a very severe nature where the pain is felt as a sharp and piercing.

Generally Cluster Headaches occur near one of the eyes or temple sides. Some of the signs of Cluster Headaches include drooping eyelids, red and watery eyes, and nasal congestion on the affected side of the face. With Cluster Headaches the pain can be felt in either side of the head as Cluster Headaches are unilateral.

The other symptoms of Cluster Headaches include having a stiff or tender neck, and suffering from jaw and teeth pain. Cluster Headaches are one of a primary group of headaches where the cause is not fully understood. It is known that Cluster Headaches occur frequently and that while they are of a short time period they cause the sufferer severe to excruciating pain.

In Cluster Headaches the pain is strictly one sided and it is intense. The pain is known to develop around the eyes. It can occur once a day or more during the day. Generally the Cluster Headache develops at night and it may last for about 30 to 60 minutes.

Cluster Headaches can occur as episodic Cluster headaches as well. These headaches are of a 6 to 12 week duration. During this period the sufferer will experience their Cluster Headache about once a year or for two years. They will develop the pain symptoms at the same time in each attack.

With episodic Cluster Headaches the headaches can strike at the same time for a period of about several week. This time period is followed by a length of headache free time. This period may last for weeks or even years. Chronic Cluster Headache sufferers on the other hand will experience multiple headaches everyday  for many years.

Cluster Headaches are also called alarm clock headaches, due to their ability to wake the sufferer from a sound night’s sleep, Horton’s syndrome and suicide headaches. This last name is in reference to the excruciating pain and the desperation to end the pain.

While medical science has described Cluster Headaches as being benign, for the person who has to live with this pain the attacks can be painful and debilitating. It seems that the only way to stop these attacks is with medications that have been special designed for Cluster Headaches.

Vascular Headaches

While many of us have heard of tension headaches and migraines there are very few of us who have heard about vascular headaches. These headaches are thought of as being an abnormal function that occurs in the brain. The interesting thing about vascular headaches is that migraines, severe tension headaches, blood pressure headaches are also considered as part of the vascular headache class.

In vascular headaches the blood vessels in the brain become affected. This constriction and enlargening of the vessels allows blood to flow to the brain in an uncontrolled manner. In vascular headaches there are a few different types of headaches that can be found. Theses headaches are tension vascular headaches, migraine vascular headaches, toxic vascular headaches and cluster vascular headaches

Tension headaches develop into tension vascular headaches when the pain develops into a pulsating condition. Generally tension headaches have a steady, dull, aching pain that can be found on both sides of the head. This pain can become tension vascular headaches when the quality of the pain changes in its intensity.

Some tension vascular headache sufferers will describe the pain as if their head was encased in a vise that is continuously tightening. The pain starts off very gradually and as time passes it increases. Even though the pain is very severe and it can distract you from your tasks it does not have the debilitating effect of migraines.

When the pain in migraines become severe to the point of being disabling they are called migraine vascular headaches. The sensation of the pain comes in throbbing head pain or pulsating form. The symptoms of migraine vascular headaches are the same as that of the normal headache. In addition to these symptoms there may other symptoms like numbness, tingling in the face and arms and also vision changes.

These secondary symptoms are known as an aura. This is the body’s early warning call. From these symptoms we can prepare for the onslaught of migraine headaches. Without taking any form of medication the severity of migraine vascular headaches remain constant and they can last for more than 3 days.

Cluster headaches are a rare but very painful type of headache. As this headache occurs in groups or clusters it had been given the name Cluster headaches. Frequent Cluster headaches are another of the vascular headaches. In this form the attack can last for weeks or months before it subsides. There is a period of remission followed by another cluster headache. With cluster headaches the symptoms sharp penetrating pain, red and teary eyes as well as a congested nose.

The last of the vascular headaches is known as toxic headache. This is the result of a fever which accompanies a very serious illness. Some of the sicknesses that can induce toxic headaches are tonsillitis, pneumonia, mumps and measles. In some cases toxic chemicals like lead, chemical solvents and alcohols can also cause the headache to turn into a vascular headache form.

Chronic Headaches

There are different types of headaches. Each of these has different lengths of time where the pain is felt. There is however a headache that is suffered constantly. This headache is known as Chronic Headache.

Chronic Headache is also a form of episodic migraine. With Chronic Headaches you feel the same severe throbbing in your temple. Unlike a migraine attack Chronic Headaches last for days if not years. One of the contributing factors to Chronic Headache is that of stress.

With stress factored into the problem Chronic Headaches develop a vicious cycle of pain. This cycle can be thought of as pain followed by increased stress which is followed by an increased level of pain. Sometimes worrying about the effects of having stress can cause a Chronic Headache to occur.

The pain of living with Chronic Headaches is in itself a stress factor. As the pain can make life difficult both mentally and physically it is best to try and identify what the triggers of Chronic Headache are. Without knowing what is causing our Chronic Headaches the pain behind the headache can make us lose sight of our families, our careers. The thought of dealing with daily life can also be a major problem.

Sometimes the best way of dealing with stress and a chronic headache is to take each task one small step at a time. When our daily problems are broken into manageable sections we can keep the stress levels down. With the reduction of stress our feelings of being overwhelmed is reduced and we are no longer at risk from a headache due to stress.

The other types of chronic headaches that can develop are chronic tension headaches and chronic cluster headaches. In chronic cluster headaches the individual will experience a multiple number of headaches everyday for years. Unlike episodic Cluster Headaches there is no period of remission for the sufferers of chronic cluster headaches.

Approximately 10 to 15% of the people who suffer from Cluster Headaches will experience Chronic Cluster Headaches. People call Chronic Cluster and Cluster headaches by a variety of names. Some of these names reflect the severity of pain that an individual may suffer due to these headaches.

Chronic tension headaches are another variety of a chronic headache that people can get. With this form of headaches the sufferer will experience Chronic Tension Headaches for about 15 or more days for at least 3 months. In this headache the pain of the tension headache is continuous.

For sufferers of Chronic Headaches there is no immediate relief to be found unless they have quick acting headache medication. These medications must be selected so that they are of benefit to the individual who suffers from a Chronic Headache daily.

Constant Headaches

A large number of people suffer from various forms of headaches. Sometimes these headaches occur on a constant basis. For the person who has constant headaches understanding the causes may be a way of stopping the headaches from re-occurring.

There are about 78% of people who suffer from constant tension headaches and a small number who are the victims of chronic migraines. For each of these individuals the treatment for their headaches must vary as the responses towards the medication is different with each individual.

In many cases the types of foods and drinks that are taken can be the causes of constant headaches. The main type of trigger is a chemical called aspartame. Various individuals who have a sensitivity to this chemical can get headaches due to the blood vessels in the brain expanding.

While caffeine based drinks are good for treating headaches too much of caffeine will cause an effect called rebound. This excess intake of caffeine is one source of constant headaches. People who suffer from constant headaches should avoid having caffeine drinks like coffee and certain sodas on a regular basis.

People can also get constant headaches because they may smoke too much of tobacco products. Likewise skipping meals can give rise to constant headaches. To avoid this situation it is best if all tobacco products are reduced drastically or eliminated altogether. Eating healthy meals on regular basis can prevent constant headaches as well.

As a great many of us know getting enough sleep is essential for the body. Individuals who suffer from tension headaches and constant headaches need to sleep for at least 8 hours in the night. They should also ensure that constant headaches are kept at bay by trying not to oversleep. Sometimes oversleeping can trigger constant headaches.

There is evidence that constant headaches can be aggravated by exposure to a lot of sunlight. Also when exercise is performed outdoors the sun causes the body to become dehydrated very quickly. Having plenty of water to drink and keeping the eyes shaded will reduce the possibility of getting constant headaches.

Constant headaches can also be caused by taking too much over the counter headache medication. Sometimes various individuals who live under a great amount of stress are subject to attacks of constant headaches. Finding ways to reduce the stress or taking anti stress medication can help to reduce the headaches. Talking with your doctor is one way of finding out what you can do for your constant headaches.

People who suffer from constant headaches can reduce the chances of succumbing to an attack by altering the way that they live. Sometimes a few simple changes are all that is needed. For instance if coffee is known to bring headache attack symptoms to life, then reducing one’s caffeine intake can help with stopping constant headaches. Changes like this are all that may be required.

Sinus Headache

Whenever we have a stuffy nose we feel that we are coming in for a cold. At these moments we will begin treatment for what we believe is a cold. Many times these medications can temporarily provide relief from the symptoms of the “cold” but they ignore the underlying cause. That is the stuffed up nose is the cause of a sinus headache.

A sinus headache occurs only when the sinus passage becomes congested with too much mucus. As the sinus passage is hollow they provide your nose with another way of breathing. Also the passage way is lined with membranes that make mucus. The nasal openings at the ends of your nose allows the mucus to drain away without causing you any problems.

In general a sinus headache is due to the fact that there is some swelling in the sinus cavity. This swelling can be found around the nose and the eyes. Other causes of sinus headaches are various allergies or infections. For any sinus headache that is caused by an allergy or an infection there is a strong chance that you may get a fever, stuffy nose or even toothaches.

Sinus headache pain is described as being a dull, deep or even severe pain that is located in the front of the face and the head. The inflammation in the sinus passage causes pain around the cheeks, eyes and the nose areas. Bending down or leaning over generally is found to increase the severity of the pain.

Sometimes sinus headache pain is found to become worse in cold weather conditions. Dampness is also a contributing factor for sinus headaches. Generally the sinus headache is very painful in the morning hours and it becomes better towards the afternoon. Two other types of headaches are sometimes mistaken for sinus headaches.

These are vascular headaches and migraine headaches. Many sufferers of migraine headaches have found that their migraine headaches can cause similar types of head pain and sometimes nasal congestion. These people also state that changes in the weather or season can contribute towards their migraine headaches.

In order to treat sinus headaches it is best to find the underlying cause first. Once this problem has been identified it is possible to provide treatment for that condition first. This problem may be an allergy or an infection. The use off nasal vasoconstrictors and analgesic medication can be used. When the condition has been cleared then the treatment for sinus headache pain can begun.

While a sinus headache can be problematic the condition is completely treatable. Likewise they are merely annoying headaches rather than debilitating. With understanding our bodies and the various responses that can be found to sinus headaches we can find ways to prevent any future episodes of sinus headache pain. With this knowledge at our disposal we can plan a sinus headache free life.
