Although typically a non-life-threatening situation, tension headaches are, quite unfortunately, frequent happenings for many people. These types of tension headaches, under the right kinds of conditions can be very agonizing anyone who suffers from them--and sometimes for those around them, too.

Labelled as a "primary" headache in the medical community, tension headaches are truly the most common headache around. (Sufferers of this headache could care less if it's a "primary" headache or not, though.) Ever had that feeling of a band going around your temples and across your eyes? That's a tension headache. Sort of like a really tight band-rubber band, metal band, clamp, whatever you want to call it-going around your head. This tight feeling gradually becomes worse and worse until it's agonizing.

Typically called mild, this pain can and does vary in intensity. The exact causes still cannot be proven scientifically, and tension headaches symptoms can be brought on by any number of things. Stressful emotional and physical circumstances, it is believed, can bring on a tension headache. When a patient is put into a really rough circumstance either physically or emotionally, violá a tension headache will appear, quickly. Generally beginning as a tight sensation in the skull, it turns into excruciating pain later on.

Cheap, over the counter medicines can do what is needed to treat tension headache symptoms, and do it fairly simply. Just about any pain reliever should be able to do the trick and turn the tide of a tension headache's symptoms. Some perfect examples would be Ibuprofen and Motrin. Primary headaches should happen randomly. If they become a regular event, then a trip to the doctor is in order for a more thorough evaluation-to rule out the possibility of a bigger problem. Physical or emotional stress should be the reason for tension headaches to appear. Headaches that start showing up out of the blue, with no cause behind them could be something to truly be worried about. When sensory (smell, touch, eyesight, even taste) issues show up, or the symptoms become continuous--this is a definite indicator of when the patient must be truly concerned, and must seek medical attention.

Excruciating pain stuck behind one eye is one of the more serious tension headache symptoms. For some people, the pain becomes almost-as one patient was heard to say-ridiculous, and makes them want to rip their hair out. At the same time, if the pain becomes so bad that their eyes or nose begins to run, then in reality, the patient may really have a cluster headache. Cluster headaches, which can show up suddenly and then disappear for years-show up as a nauseously painful feeling at the rear of the eye. Feelings such as this can be painful enough to put patients into a crisis. It is absolutely necessary that the patient seek immediate medical attention as the pain can become debilitating.
